CABOCHON RINGS

A cabochon is a stone that is polished to a finished shape, rather than being cut, and suits some precious and semi-precious stones more than others. In most cases, the finished stone will be elliptical and have a flat back. Technically, cabochons are not really "cut." Instead, they are shaped and then polished. Thus, it is a much simpler task to produce a cabochon than it is to cut a faceted gem with many faces. Before the art of faceting was developed, all gemstones were produced as cabochons, though some were intricately carved as well. Opposite to enhancing sparkle, Cabochons captivate by enhancing color, reflection, or translucence over a domed surface.
